Preparation Guide for Exam 70-272
Supporting Users and Troubleshooting Desktop Applications on a Microsoft Windows XP Operating System
Audience Profile
Candidates for this exam support end users who run Microsoft Windows XP Professional in a corporate environment or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition in a home environment. They should have experience using applications that are included with the operating system, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook Express, as well as the productivity applications used in a corporate environment, such as Microsoft Office applications.

Candidates should be able to resolve operating system issues by telephone, by connecting to an end user’s system remotely, or by visiting an end user’s desktop. They should have a working knowledge of operating in a workgroup or Active Directory domain environment and how end users are affected by each environment.

This exam, when combined with 70-271 (the operating system exam for desktop support technicians), should validate that a candidate can successfully answer, or escalate, all calls from end users.

QUESTION 1:
You work as the network administrator at Certkiller .com. The Certkiller .com
network consists of a single Active Directory domain named Certkiller .com. All
servers on the Certkiller .com network run Windows Server 2003 and all client
computers run Windows XP Professional.
Following a compromise of the passwords of two user accounts in the Public
Relations department, Certkiller .com issues a new security policy that requires all
user accounts to have strong passwords. All Certkiller .com users have been
instructed to change their passwords to meet the new security policy. Three days
later a user named Dean Austin informs you that he cannot log on to the domain. He
was able to log on yesterday. He has tried to log on six times today and has bee
unsuccessful of all six occasions.

Actualtest.org – The Power of Knowing
The account policies that are applied in the Domain Security GPO are shown in the
following table.
Policy setting Value
MinimumPasswordAge 1
MaximumPasswordAge 42
MinimumPasswordLength 7
PasswordComplexity 1
PasswordHistorySize 24
LockoutBadCount 3
ResetLockoutCount 30
LockoutDuration 30
What should you do to ensure that Dean Austin can log on to the domain?
A. In Active Directory Users and Computers, reset the password for Dean Austin’s
computer account.
B. In Active Directory Users and Computers, unlock Dean Austin’s user account.
C. In the user account properties of Dean Austin’s user account, select the Password
never expires check box.
D. In the user account properties of Dean Austin’s user account, select the User must
change password on next login check box.
Answer: B
Explanation: Dean Austin’s account got locked out since he made six unsuccessful
attempts to log on to the domain and the table in the question clearly shows that the
LockoutBadCount is set to 5.
The most common problems with user accounts are due to group membership, password
problems, or account lockouts. Group membership problems manifest themselves by
users not being able to access resources that are assigned through group membership.
This can easily be verified and corrected via Active Directory Users and Computers or
from the command line using the dsget.exe and dsmod.exe commands. Password
problems are usually due to users forgetting their password and needing it reset. This can
be accomplished via Active Directory Users and Computers or via the dsmod.exe
command. Lastly: users often lockout their accounts due to them entering their password
incorrectly. This is usually due to them forgetting their password because they just

changed it recently, in which case you would need to unlock their account and reset their
password. Sometimes they just cannot type or CAPS LOCK is on and they enter in their
password incorrectly too many times and lock their account. User accounts can be
unlocked by using Active Directory Users and Computers or by using the dsmod.exe
command. The user said he attempted to log on six times, but failed. As a result the
account is locked out. Therefore we can simply unlock the user account, and he can
logon again.
Incorrect Answers:
A: Resetting the password for Dean Austin’s user account does not necessarily grant log
on rights to the domain. You need to unlock the account first.
C: Modifying the properties of the account to password never expires will not affect the
situation. The account must first be unlocked. Whether the password expires or not, he
will still need to use a strong password once the account has been unlocked. He
obviously went over the account lockout count threshold.
D: Dean Austin’s problems stems from going over the account lockout threshold too
many times. His account has to be unlocked first to be able to log on to the domain. The
User must change password on next logon check box in his user account properties will
not help in this case as his account has been locked out.

QUESTION 2:
You work as the network administrator at Certkiller .com. The Certkiller .com
network consists of a single Active Directory domain named Certkiller .com. All
servers on the Certkiller .com network run Windows Server 2003 and all client
computers run Windows XP Professional.
Certkiller .com contains a Finance department that keeps records of the transactions
with their clients. The records of the Finance department reside in a file server
named Certkiller -SR16. A Group Policy Object (GPO) is configured for the
domain that requires that passwords should be changed every 3 months.
The GPO is configured to protect the resources against brute force attacks. When a
Certkiller .com user named Andy Booth returns from vacation, he is unable to access
the domain from Certkiller -WS123. During an investigation you discover that the
user’s password has expired. You reset the password for Andy Booth. After the
reset the user can still not log on to the domain.
What should you do?
A. Unlock the Andy Booth’s user account.
B. Reset the computer account for Certkiller -WS123.
C. Shutdown and restart Certkiller -WS123.
D. Decrease the value of the Account lockout duration setting.

Actualtest.org – The Power of Knowing
Answer: A
Explanation: You need to unlock the account. To protect the domain form brute
force attacks, account policies can be created using group policy to lock a user
account if a specified number of failed attempts occur during a specified period of
time.
Incorrect answers:
B: The computer account will not be affected by the user’s expired password.
C: Shutdown and restart the computer will not have an effect on the user’s expired user
password.
D: You should not do this, because domain security policy is there to defend the network
against unauthorized access.
QUESTION 3:
You work as the network administrator at Certkiller .com. The Certkiller .com
network consists of a single Active Directory domain named Certkiller .com. All
servers on the Certkiller .com network run Windows Server 2003 and all client
computers run Windows XP Professional.
Certkiller .com contains a Sales department that keeps records of the transactions
with their clients. An account lockout policy is configured for the domain as shown
in the exhibit.
When a Certkiller .com user named Mia Hamm returns from a two week vacation,
she cannot remember her password and quite a few times tried some of her old
password, but was unable to log on to the domain. You need Mia Hamm to log on to
the domain.
What should you do?
A. Unlock Mia Hamm’s user account and reset the password.
B. Unlock Mia Hamm’s user account and retrieve his password.
C. Increase the value of the Account lockout duration setting and unlock the password.
D. Decrease the value of the Reset account lockout after setting in the Account lockout
policy and unlock the password.
Answer: A

Actualtest.org – The Power of Knowing
Explanation: Mia Hamm forgot her password, that way you have to reset her
password.
Incorrect answers:
B: You cannot retrieve password is Windows 2003 or Active Directory. The password
must be reset.
C: You should not modify the domain lockout policy, because a user forgot his
password.
E: You should not decrease the value of the Reset account lockout after setting in the
Account lockout policy
